If I'm not mistaken, I believe a lot of this was made on the HF 1x30. I grabbed my Craftsman 2x42 off of Craigslist for about $120 a few months ago. It is 1/2HP so not quite as bad as the 1/3HP one. You'll want to do the ceramic glass or ceramic tile platen fix with the HF 1x30 or you'll probably be pretty frustrated.

The craftsman gets the job done but i wouldn't spend a bunch of time upgrading it. i use this grinder for all my knives and after using a few real grinders while i was in Europe (thanks Dan and Owen!) i gotta say its hard to go back..... another option if you are set on the variable motor is the coote grinder for 400 and then get the motor!

I use it for making tobacco pipes, knives, an anything else that can hold my interest for a few days. The 2x42 is horribly under powered, crazy fast and limited in its belt options.
